About us

The Akron Peace Project began in the spring of 2010 as an effort to promote the ideals of nonviolence.

As divisiveness and closed-mindedness spread politically, religiously, and socially, co-founders Zach Freidhof and Bekey Hewit saw the dire need in the community for a nonviolent message.

They immediately set out to create some events to spread this message, and in turn have created an organization dedicated to cultivating nonviolence in the self, the home, and the community.

Bekey Hewit has been a victims' advocate since 2005. She is an active member and elected Officer of the Domestic & Sexual Abuse Coalition (DSAC) and has acted as Chair of the Marketing sub-committee. She is a certified facilitator of the World Peace Diet. She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master, and Certified Herbalist.

Bekey is dedicated to “being the change” through advocacy and volunteering her Massage Therapy & Reiki services for various benefits throughout the community. Bekey believes that peace can be attained through reflection, compassion, and selflessness, and hopes that you will join the Akron Peace Project by participating in achieving peace within your self, home, and community.

Zach is a nationally touring singer/songwriter. He has been living his dream since 1998 when a near-death injury put him on the path to music. As a musician, he writes and performs uplifting, hopeful, and inspiring music. Several of his songs have been placed on radio, TV, independent films, and documentaries. A line from his song Manifest sums up his philosophy: “We should manifest ourselves in exquisiteness every chance we get.”

He is also a certified World Peace Diet Facilitator.

He is also a humanitarian in the community, organizing the Love Initiative, “An Evening for Chuck”--a yearly benefit for pancreatic cancer research, and is an outspoken vegan, environmentalist, and arts advocate. Find out more about Zach at
